‘Don't let yesterday use up too much of today’ - Native American Proverb
How often do you find yourself ruminating over a past conversation or incident, reliving it moment by moment in your mind? Thinking of how you could have done it differently? The regrets and need for a retake can haunt and consume you, robbing you of the present moment.
The truth is, there is NOTHING we can do to change what has happened. BUT if we’re fully available to the ‘now’, we may be able to determine how to best move forward. Perhaps we can make some corrections in our knee jerk responses to triggers or discover a nugget of insight resulting from the experience.
Sometimes reliving a positive experience can equally rob us of the present moment. Revisiting a point in the past when life was more enjoyable or manageable, while comforting, can also rob you of the ability to appreciate where you are in life right now. Or worse, rob you of the hope that your present and future have value and are worthy of your full attention and intention.
Whatever the case, using up precious time on the past may get you stuck right there, missing out on the beauty right in front of you.
