Feeling ‘stuck’ at work?
You’re not alone! Many people may feel ‘stuck’ in their professional and personal lives. While the reasons vary from person to person, there are common emotions and feelings related to the experience. You may feel disempowered, disconnected, confused, angry, and my personal ‘go to’… paralyzed. These are just examples; each of our journeys is unique.
Regardless of the reasons, or the emotions you’re experiencing, there is hope. Here are a few ideas on how to process your feelings and move forward:
1. Brain dump - Make a list of all the emotions that come up for you when you think about your career. Examine each and determine the reason for the emotion. Read through what you’ve written for clues on the story that’s running in your head. Are there any limiting beliefs present that could be sabotaging your progress? Is there misinformation that needs further investigation or correction?
2. Have you shifted? What are your current values, and do they still match the career and/or company you’ve chosen? If not, what shifts can you make to better align them?
3. Get creative. Is there a special project you can volunteer for to take you out of your comfort zone, allowing you to think outside of the box, meet new people or acquire new skills?
4. Visualize. How would it look to be thriving at work? Now, work backwards exploring the steps to get you there. If there are no roads leading to happiness where you are, then perhaps it’s time to consider a career or company change.
5. Expand. Find healthy outlets to improve yourself and outlook. A course, exercise regimen, adequate sleep, healthier eating, travel, etc. may be helpful in shifting your mood to clear your thoughts and help you see a path forward.
